Politics

-- Vietnam’s Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on Tuesday received a Lao delegation led by Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, head of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Commission for Propaganda and Education and President of the Lao National Council for Social Sciences. During a working session the same day, Dinh The Huynh, Politburo member and head of the Vietnamese Party Central Committee Commission for Propaganda and Education, and Khaykhamphithoune also discussed measures to realize cooperation agreements between their agencies.

-- On Tuesday, over 100 overseas young Vietnamese were hailed by State President Truong Tan Sang at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi. The young people are in Vietnam to join a summer camp which is slated to open in Hanoi on Thursday, and wrap up in Ho Chi Minh City on July 31.

-- The Security General Department under the Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday announced the preliminary results of an investigation of Giang Kim Dat and his accomplices who are involved in a notorious economic scandal at the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) that caused a total loss to the national coffers of US$18.6 million. Dat, 37, former acting head of the sales department of a subsidiary under Vinashin, has been found having up to 40 luxury properties registered under his family members’ names across the country. The assets are believed to be earned during his work at the subsidiary.

-- As of Tuesday evening, relevant agencies in Dong Nai Province, which borders Ho Chi Minh City, were still unable to bring a 27-year-old tramp down from a construction crane to safety. The man was dangling and creeping since 3:00 am the same day on the cables and cabin of the crane that is around 50 meters tall at the construction site of the People’s Court in Bien Hoa City, the province’s capital. He yelled and banged hard on the crane, drawing a large crowd of inquisitive spectators beneath.

-- The People’s Committee in the central city of Da Nang on Tuesday decided to receive the medical equipment worth $1.6 million from Harold Chan Soo York, a Singaporean philanthropist, who wishes to hand over the kit to Da Nang Hospital.

-- Vietnam’s Hoa Lam Co. on Tuesday started work on a project to build the Hoa Lam International Hospital at the Hoa Lam-Shangrila High-Tech Healthcare Zone, located in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City. The 10-floor, 351-bed infirmary, which costs VND1.5 trillion ($67.7 million) to build, is located on an area of over 35,000 square meters and is slated to become operational by the end of next year.

-- The National Board for Traffic Safety and the Vietnam division of GrabTaxi, the largest mobile taxi booking app firm in Southeast Asia, inked a deal in Da Nang City on Tuesday to pilot a model on safe driving from 2015 to 2018. To start with, ten restaurants selling alcoholic beverages in Da Nang will offer free GrabTaxi rides to take their drunk clients home safely along with other free services.

-- The World Health Organization on Tuesday kick-started a campaign called “First Embrace” in Vietnam. The campaign is meant to publicize simple steps to save newborns’ lives and avert health risks among this highly vulnerable group.

Business

-- The People’s Committee of Da Nang City has recently proposed that the State Bank of Vietnam take measures to avoid imposing too many fees on users of ATMs, Master and Visa cards.

-- Dang Viet Dung, deputy chair of the Da Nang City People’s Committee, told a meeting on Tuesday that Clipper Ventures Plc, the organizer of the 2015-2016 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which is an international sport event meant to promote tourism images of the participating countries, has agreed that Da Nang will be the race’s only destination in Southeast Asia. Fourteen yachts from 12 teams in different countries will depart from London late next month and compete for 11 months. The racers will sweep through 138 countries in South America, Australia, Asia, and the U.S., and are expected to enter Da Nang between January and February next year, Dung added.

-- The People’s Committee of Da Nang City has also proposed that the municipal police department step up inspections and slap hefty penalties on those who threaten tour guides and coerce tourists into buying items at local shops and restaurants.
