--The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed to the Ministry of Transport two “golden air routes,” between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City that would cross the airspace of Laos and Cambodia for the benefits they would bring.

-- Song Thu General Company of the Defense Industry General Department launched the multi-purpose 8002 Vietnam Coast Guard Vessel at Song Thu Port in central Vietnam’s Da Nang City on Saturday morning. The state-of-the-art vessel has a helicopter pad.

-- According to a report summarizing business activity in September 2014 which was recently released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the month saw a sharp rise in the import of goods which need to be restricted, including cars of less than nine seats, gold and gemstones. The ministry also pointed out that the import turnover during the first nine months of 2014 also soared to roughly US$4.5 billion. -- Several airplanes of Vietnamese flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and budget carrier Jetstar Pacific failed to land at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Aiport due to limited visibility caused by thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon. The planes had to land at reserve airports of Cam Ranh and Buon Ma Thuot in central Vietnam. A Jetstar Pacific plane from Cam Ranh destined for Ho Chi Minh City also had to return to central Da Nang City.

-- In recent times, Vietnam has seen a climb in the number of inbound tourists from Islamic Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and the Middle East.

Society

-- On Saturday, which marked the first anniversary of Vietnamese general Vo Nguyen Giap’s death, thousands flocked to his house in Hanoi and his resting place in central Vietnam’s Quang Binh Province – his hometown – to pay homage to the general. The guard team at his resting place reported that over 1.35 million visits have been made since Gen. Giap passed away on October 4, 2013, aged 102. 

-- Three workers of the Thuong Song Ong hydropower plant in central Ninh Thuan Province’s Ninh Son District were struck dead by lightning while they were working on Friday evening. Two others were also critically injured.

Lifestyle

-- The crew of a Vietnamese documentary called “Ban Hoa Tau Son Doong” (The Symphony of Son Doong) is in the process of making the film, which features Son Doong Cave – the world’s current largest. The cave has been covered by famed international television channels including National Geographic, BBC, and NHK.

Education -- Hoa Sen (Lotus) University, a Vietnamese higher education institution, gave away scholarships worth a total of roughly VND6 billion ($282,406) to new students at its new school year opening ceremony on Saturday.

-- Vietnam’s high-profile U-19 football players caused quite a stir at the new school year opening of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sports as the school’s new enrollees on Saturday.

-- Vietnam’s U-19 football players are set to fly to Nay Pyi Taw – Myanmar’s capital – on Sunday noon to prep for the finals of the AFC U-19 Championship 2014, to kick off on October 9.
