Team Vietnam finished the fifth day of the 2016 Rio Paralympics on Tuesday morning with a silver and a bronze in swimming and athletics events, raising the country’s total medal count to four.

Vietnamese swimmer Vo Thanh Tung bagged Vietnam’s third Paralympic medal after finishing second in the men’s 50m freestyle final for S5 swimmers.

According to classification guides issued by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), S5 swimmers are those “with short stature and an additional impairment, with loss of control over one side of their body (hemiplegia), or with paraplegia” competing in freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke events.

Tung finished 1.16 seconds behind Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias, who is also the current world record holder in the event.

Despite having a bad start and being fifth after the first 20 meters, Tung quickly picked up speed to finish second in 33.94 seconds.

U.S. swimmer Roy Perkins came third in a time of 34.42 seconds.

Later the same day, javelin thrower Cao Ngoc Hung took home Vietnam’s fourth medal at the Paralympics, finishing third in the men’s javelin throw final for F56 and F57 athletes.

Athletes in class F56 demonstrate some hip flexion and adductor muscle activity in addition to trunk function, while athletes in class F57 demonstrate the additional ability to extend and abduct the hips, according to IPC’s Paralympic classification guide.

Hung’s throw traveled 43.27 meters, placing him third behind Iranian athletes Mohammad Khalvandi and Abdollah Heidari Til, who scored 46.12 meters and 43.77 meters respectively.

With Tung and Hung’s medals, Vietnam is currently placed 38th on the Rio Paralympics medal table with one gold, one silver, and two bronzes.

Earlier, weightlifters Le Van Cong and Dang Thi Linh Phuong had snatched a gold and a bronze in their respective powerlifting events, making history as they were Vietnam’s first-ever medals at a Paralympic event.

The 2016 Paralympic Games runs from September 7 to 18 in Rio de Janeiro.
