Travel will be restricted or prohibited on several streets in Ho Chi Minh City when U.S. President Barack Obama leaves Hanoi for the southern hub, his second and last stop of a three-day visit to Vietnam, on Tuesday, the municipal traffic police said.

President Obama, who is in the Vietnamese capital after arriving on Sunday night, is scheduled to come to Ho Chi Minh City at 3:00 pm tomorrow, and leave the southern metropolis for Japan at noon the following day.

To ensure security and safety for the U.S. leader, traffic on the main roads connecting Tan Son Nhat International Airport with the downtown area will be strictly regulated during the time when Obama is in Ho Chi Minh City, the city’s traffic police unit said on Monday.

Nguyen Van Troi and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, two streets that run from the airport to the city’s center, will be totally blocked between 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm on Tuesday (May 24), and from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Wednesday (May 25), when Obama’s motorcade travels by.

Traffic restriction, in the meantime, will be enforced on several types of vehicles on a dozen streets from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Tuesday (May 24), and 6:00 am to 2:00 pm on Wednesday (May 25).

The travel ban applies to trucks with a loading capacity of over 500kg, passenger buses and taxis. Such means of transport as cars carrying security badges, buses, street-cleaning trucks and emergency vehicles are all immune to the ban.

The streets where the barricades will be put include Truong Son, Tran Quoc Hoan, Nguyen Van Troi, Dien Bien Phu, Dinh Tien Hoang, Vo Thi Sau, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Du, Le Duan, Nguyen Binh Khiem, Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nguyen Trung Truc, Chu Manh Trinh, Mai Thi Luu, Nguyen Van Giai, and Nguyen Huy Tu.

Individual vehicles, such as bicycles and motorbikes, are only limited, not banned, on these streets during the two periods of time.

The traffic police unit also suggested alternative routes to use during the travel ban.

People traveling from Cong Hoa Street to the city’s downtown area can consider the following route: Cong Hoa => Hoang Van Thu => Le Van Sy => Tran Quoc Thao or Hoang Van Thu => Xuan Hong => Xuan Dieu => Truong Chinh => Cach Mang Thang Tam => city’s center.

Those who want to go from the downtown area to Tan Son Nhat or Cong Hoa Street can follow these alternative routes: Hai Ba Trung => Phan Dinh Phung => Phan Dang Luu => Hoang Van Thu => enter the airport; or Vo Thi Sau => Tran Quoc Thao => Le Van Sy => Hoang Van Thu.

In Ho Chi Minh City, President Obama will visit the Jade Pagoda in District 1, attend an entrepreneurship event, and host a town hall with members of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI).
