-- Ho Chi Minh City must continue strengthening the Party building work, which is a regular, uninterrupted and long-term task, said Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong while working on March 29 with the municipal leaders on the implementation of the Resolution of the 4th meeting of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee regarding some urgent issues on Party building. The Party leader emphasized the need to regularly examine the implementation of the resolution, adding that improving the Party’s leadership and combative strength is key to sustainable development, thus protecting the regime and revolutionary fruits.

-- The Ministry of Public Security yesterday removed deputy director of the Hai Phong City Police Department, Colonel Nguyen Binh Kien, from his post for his serious violations on regulations of the public security sector. Earlier on January 18, 2013, Kien, 55, was expelled from the Communist Party of Vietnam by the city Party Committee for violating 19 things Party members are banned from doing.   

-- The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court sentenced a 45-year-old woman to death for killing her husband, 51-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Tran Xuan Chuyen, by using sleeping pills and pesticide during three days from March 11-13. Lien told the court that she and Chuyen had experienced many conflicts that originated from her debts. She said she wanted to kill Chuyen to solely possess their house and sell it to repay her debts.

-- Over 100 houses were damaged and at least 2 people were injured during a 30-minute hail storm, with hailstones as large as adults’ fists or bowls, in Bao Yen District, northern Lao Cai province at 2 am yesterday, March 29. Three days earlier, another hail storm hit 26 communes and towns in the province’s Muong Khuong, Bac Ha and Si Ma Cai Districts, damaging more than 10,500 houses and injuring at least 26 people.

-- A three-month-old baby died in northern Hai Duong Province yesterday after getting vaccinated with Quinvaxem, a vaccine that prevents five diseases, including diphtheria, whooping-cough, tetanus, Hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). The death of the boy was the seventh among the children nationally who have been vaccinated with Quinvaxem since December 2012, health authorities reported.

Business

-- Sanofi Group, the French-based global pharmaceutical producer, announced a plan to build its third factory at a cost of US$75 million in HCM City’s high technology park in a press conference on March 29. The new state-of-the-art plant will enhance Sanofi’s capacity in Vietnam to meet the Vietnamese pharmaceutical market’s increasing demand as well as serve as an export platform to other ASEAN countries. The plant is scheduled to be put into operation by the end of 2015 with an initial output capacity of 90 million units per year, including high-quality pharmaceuticals and consumer healthcare products.

Lifestyle

-- Nha Trang City in central Khanh Hoa Province will host a four-day sea festival featuring various events from June 8 to 11.  The festival, which is held bi-annually by the provincial authorities to promote the local economic potential, culture, tourism, and sustainable development, will comprise nearly 50 events such as trade fairs, exhibitions, seminars, painting contests, sports competitions, cuisine programs, and special music and dance performances about the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago. The festival is aimed at attractting domestic and foreign tourists and investors to Nha Trang.

Sports

-- Vietnamese female gymnast Phan Thi Ha Thanh won a gold medal at the FIG Challenge Cup in Doha, Qatar on Friday, March 29, after scoring 14,825 points to top the list in the women’s jumping event. In the qualifying round on Wednesday, the 22-year-old had ranked just fourth with 14,100 points. Larisa Andreea (Romania) came second with 14,675 points and Giulia Steingruber (Switzerland) third with 14,662 points to get the silver and bronze, respectively.
