-- The Royal Australian Navy warship HMAS Ballarat will arrive in southern Ho Chi Minh City with a crew of 28 officers and 156 sailors on August 22, starting their five-day visit to Vietnam, the Australian Embassy in Vietnam said on Friday. The warship’s Commanding Officer and crew will meet with senior officers and sailors from the Vietnamese People's Navy to engage in a range of goodwill activities and to conduct a professional exchange on ship operations.

Society --  Two anti-State agitators had their sentences reduced at the appeal court of the southern Long An Province People’s Court on Friday. Dinh Nguyen Kha, 25, received a four-year jail term, instead of 8 years’ imprisonment previously given by the lower court. Nguyen Phuong Uyen, a 21-year-old student, had her six-year jail term reduced to a three-year suspended sentence and a 52-month probation. They were charged with “conducting propaganda against the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam”. -- Police in District 1, HCMC are investigating a large theft that occurred at Minh wristwatch shop on 94A Pasteur Street on Thursday. Thieves broke in the shop on Wednesday night and took away 30 deluxe watches about VND828 million (US$39,300) in total.  --  The former director of the Tien Giang Province Mental Hospital, Tran Thi That, is in police custody for allegedly embezzling more than VND2 billion (US$96,000) while she was the hospital’s director before 2012.  That will be detained for two months for investigation. The embezzlement occurred during the process of making payments to the hospital’s medicine suppliers. Such payments were made by To Van Dung, an accountant at the hospital, who has also been arrested. --   About 2,000 workers at On Accessories Co Ltd located in the Tan Huong Industrial Park in Tieng Giang Province stopped working on Friday to oppose the company’s managers who did not answered about why maggots were found in their meal last week. During the strike, a fight occurred between some workers and the company’s security guards. Police were called to restore order.  -- Many antiques dating back from the 14-15th century were recovered from a shipwreck off central Quang Ngai province’s Binh Son district. The sunken ship was found by local fishermen on Friday. It is the second shipwreck with antiques that has been found in the area since last September 2012.Business --  Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has assigned the Transport Ministry to consider a proposal not to build the Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province, a US$7.8 billion project. The proposal was made by former head of the management department of the Tan Son Nhat Airport Le Trong Sanh and former pilot of Flight Crew Division 919 Mai Trong Tuan, who said that the planned new airport will cause inconvenience  to passengers. They advise that the Tan Son Nhat airport be expanded to meet the increasing demand for air travel.

-- Petrolimex, or Vietnam National Petroleum Corporation, earned VND898 billion (US$42.7 million) in pre-tax profit in the first half of 2013, accounting for 45 percent of the year’s profit plan, according to the Corporation’s consolidated financial statements. Of the amount, 43 percent came from the trade of petrol and oil, 34 percent from its subsidiaries, and the rest from other activities.Lifestyle -- Takeda Souun, a popular Japanese calligrapher, has arrived in Vietnam to demonstrate his chosen art form and hold workshops on the subject in Hanoi and Hoi An, as part of the activities for the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Vietnam. Souun, who was appointed “Japan Cultural Envoy 2013″ by Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, will have a demonstration and exchange with Vietnamese artist Trung Hieu, member of Vietnam UNESCO Calligraphy Club at Literature Temple In Hanoi on August 17. He will go to Hoi An to lecture at a workshop at the Japan-Hoi An Festival on August 24-25 at Song Hoai River Square.
