VN offers opinions on human rights in Myanmar, Iran, DPRK

A Vietnamese representative has voiced opinions related to the situations of human rights in Myanmar, Iran, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) at the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which is taking place in Switzerland.

>> Vietnam reiterates promotion of human rights>> Vietnam applauds human rights recommendations Ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh, head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, Switzerland gave such opinions at Monday’s dialogues conducted by the UNHRC on ensuring and promoting human rights in the three countries.More cooperation with Myanmar Regarding Myanmar, the ambassador welcomed the country’s commitment to boosting economic and political reforms, realizing democratization, encouraging national reconciliation, and continuing to ensure and promote the rights of people. Vietnam also highly appreciates the efforts of the UNHRC in particular, and the UN and the international community in general to support Myanmar in the current historical period, Thanh said. In order to strengthen and promote the achievements Myanmar has made in its democratization, national reconciliation, and economic development process as well as the protection of people's rights, especially of vulnerable social groups, the international community should continue to cooperate with Myanmar on the basis of respect for the nation’s sovereignty and independence, show mutual respect, and carry out constructive dialogue and sincere cooperation, he said. The ambassador also expressed his belief that Myanmar is taking the right step towards peace, security and prosperity. He affirmed Vietnam's goodwill and efforts to assist Myanmar in enhancing the quality of life and promoting the protection of people's rights. Vietnam is also willing to share with Myanmar its experience in national reconstruction, socio-economic development, and regional and international integration.Long-term solutions for DPRK On the same day, the UNHRC also conducted a dialogue about human rights in the DPRK. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Trung said that related parties should maintain constructive dialogue and sincere cooperation with the country to seek long-term solutions to improving human rights in the country in particular, and settling other issues on the Korean peninsula in general. The Vietnamese diplomat also said that immediate priorities should be focused on humanitarian issues, including those related to food, education and healthcare for people, especially women and children.Iran’s commitments welcomed Speaking at the dialogue on human rights in Iran, Ambassador Trung welcomed the attempts and commitments of the country’s new government, and said that the agreements recently reached between Iran and related parties on the country's energy program may usher in a new phase of cooperation between Iran and the world, contributing to the strengthening of security and peace in the region. Vietnam welcomes Iran’s commitments and hopes that Iran and the related parties will continue boosting cooperation to consolidate and expand the achievements they have gained, Trung said. Also included in the agenda of the 25th session, which kicked off on March 3, are many other important issues, including migrants’ rights, children’s rights, rights of minority groups, and human rights in the post-2015 sustainable development. The session’s participants will continue to discuss and negotiate draft resolutions on ensuring and promoting human rights in a number of countries before the event ends on March 28.
