Vietnam’s 12th National Party Congress has begun conducting an election for the members of the Party Central Committee for the next five-year term.

Congress delegates on Tuesday cast their votes to determine the 200 new members of the 12th Party Central Committee, including 180 official members and 20 alternative ones.

The Party Central Committee is a powerful panel within the Communist Party of Vietnam chosen by the National Party Congress.

Members of the committee will then elect the Politburo, the ultimate body of the Party.

The 11th Party Central Committee had 175 official members and 25 alternate seats.

The candidate list for the membership comprises 246 people, which was approved by the congress on Monday.

Candidate names are arranged in alphabetical order, along with dates of birth, positions, working institutions, and other information.

The election is chaired by Nguyen Phu Trong, incumbent General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and monitored by a ballot counting committee led by Nguyen The Trung, member of the 11th Party Central Committee.

A total of 1,510 ballots have been distributed to all the participants of the congress, Trung said.

The ballots were placed in two boxes, one for official members and the other for the alternate.

The results will be announced later on Tuesday.

On Monday, the congress named the complete list of candidates for the membership of the Party Central Committee for 2016-20 after thorough consideration.

Congress delegates also approved the withdrawal of 29 nominees from the election, including such country leaders as State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and others.

The 12th National Party Congress takes place in Hanoi from January 20 to 28 with the attendance of 1,510 delegates representing 4.5 million Party members across the country.

The new General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam for 2016-20 will be elected on January 27, and the result will be announced as the grand event concludes on January 28.
