Surgery at Hanoi hospital suspended following two deaths

Monday, December 26, 2016, 15:28 GMT+7

All surgical operations at a private hospital in Hanoi have been halted after two patients died while under anesthesia in preparation for their surgeries.

The local Department of Health on Sunday said its inspectorate was working with local police to investigate a medical complication that led to the deaths of two patients at Tri Duc General Hospital in Hai Ba Trung District.

One of the patients was 37-year-old police officer P., while the other was T., a 34-year-old man from the city’s Phu Xuyen District.

P. was admitted for thyroid surgery, while T. went in for a tonsillectomy.

Both patients suffered from medical complications during anesthesia and were transferred to Bach Mai Hospital, a major infirmary, for emergency treatment, according to early reports by the hospital.

P. reportedly showed signs of anaphylaxis such as shortness of breath, low blood pressure and lightheadedness after being injected with a dose of anesthetics in preparation for her surgery.

Hai Ba Trung police then received a report from one of the victims’ families and already began working on the case, deputy chief Nguyen Thanh Tin said.

All surgical operations at the hospital have been suspended for investigation, according to a statement by Luong Ngoc Khue, head of the Department of Clinical Management under the Ministry of Health.

Tri Duc General Hospital was also requested to prepare a full report of the case to be submitted to competent agencies while working closely with the victims’ families and investigative bodies to determine the causes of the deaths.
