Torrential rain delivered relief for Hanoi residents following days of soaring temperatures, but still managed to cause delays and the redirection of over 30 flights.

Between 4:30 pm to 5:20 pm on Tuesday afternoon, the downpour cooled temperatures, which had reached a record high of over 40 degrees Celsius earlier in the week.

The heavy rain was accompanied by strong winds, posing difficulties for local commuters.

Several streets in the downtown area, namely Giang Vo, Lang Ha, and Nguyen Khanh Toan, were inundated after over 40 millimeters of rain fell.

The downpour also impacted local aviation activity as about 32 flights were unable to land or take off at Noi Bai International Airport, said a leader of the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation.

A total of 22 flights had their departure times delayed, while 10 other aircrafts scheduled to land in the capital were redirected to the northern cities of Vinh, Hai Phong, or the central city of Da Nang.

One passenger aboard a Da Nang- Hanoi flight operated by national carrier Vietnam Airlines, N.Q.L., complained that the plane had to return to the central city after failing to land at Noi Bai Airport.

Flights from Hong Kong To Hanoi were also redirected to Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong, resulting in overloading at the facility.

Noi Bai Airport was however, able to resume normal operations by around 5:40 pm on the same day.
