A Vietnamese bride was murdered by her South Korean father-in-law in Seoul earlier this month, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Seoul has been working with local authorities on resolving the horrific incident since shortly after being briefed of the case, the ministry’s spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang told reporters in Hanoi.
According to the Vietnamese Embassy, the victim, 31-year-old Bui Cat Ha, lived with her South Korean husband and his family in Seoul’s Seongbuk-gu District.
“Her father-in-law, known only as Kim, was arrested for murder by Seoul police,” Hang said.
The Vietnamese foreign ministry is completing procedures to repatriate Ha’s cremated remains.
“The Vietnamese embassy will continue working on this case to protect the rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens, and ensure that those found guilty are punished,” Hang underlined.
South Korean media quoted the Seongbuk-gu’s prosecution office as saying on Wednesday that Kim, 83, stabbed his Vietnamese daughter-in-law in the neck and back while she was sleeping at around 4:00 am on June 2.
Ha and Kim had argued at dinner on June 1, with the South Korean man accusing Ha of disrespecting him and refusing to give him money.
The murder took place at their home in Seongbuk-gu. The husband was not with his Vietnamese wife at that time.
At 9:00 am the same day, the husband became suspicious when his wife failed to show up at work. He searched the house and found blood, prompting him to call the police to arrest his father.
