Society:

-- Doctors at Binh Dan hospital in the southern Mekong Delta province of An Giang have removed a 950gram stone out of the bladder of a 59-year-old local man. The patient shows good recovery after the surgery, the doctors said.

-- A Vietnam Airlines’s civil aircraft will bring the body of General Vo Nguyen Giap to his home, said Le Truong Giang, spokesman of Vietnam Airlines.

-- Customs officials in the northern province of Hai Phong seized ivory tusks weighing more than 2 tonnes concealed inside a container coming from Malaysia.

-- A big fire hit Thanh Tri fruit market in My Tho town in the southern province of Tien Giang on Oct. 10, causing damage to 63 fruit booths and two houses close to the market. 

Business:

-- The US$9 billion Nghi Son oil refinery plant with a capacity of 10 million tons a year, located in the Nghi Son Economic Zone in Thanh Hoa Province,  will meet 40 percent of domestic demand for fuel, said Trinh Van Chien, chairman of Thanh Hoa People’s Committee, at a press conference held in Hanoi on Oct 8.

-- There will be one more airport in the Ba Ria – Vung Tau southern province. The new airport will be constructed in Go Gang Island, Long Son commune. 

-- World Bank has just announced a 2.5 year ban to the Thang Long Infrastructure Development Joint-stock Company and its subsidiaries after WB found false information in their bidding reports.

Politics:

-- President Truong Tan Sang and other leaders of the members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreed to settle remaining issues in order to complete negotiations within the year in a bid to reach a comprehensive and balanced deal, according to VNA.

-- Respect-paying and memorial services for General Vo Nguyen Giap will be held in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Hall on October 12 and October 13, according to an announcement released by the organising board on October 8.

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on Oct 8 for Brunei’s capital Bandar Seri Begawan to attend the 23rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings at the invitation of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, according to VNA.
