Typhoon Bopha enters East Sea

Thursday, December 06, 2012, 11:33 GMT+7

After battering the southern Philippines and killing at least 283 people as of yesterday evening, massive typhoon Bopha entered the East Sea and will change its course multiple times, the Vietnam National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported.

>> Super typhoon Bopha moves towards East Sea At 1 pm yesterday the typhoon was located 490 km east-southeast of Song Tu Tay Island in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, packing winds of 118-133 kph. The storm has since moved at 15 kph between west and northwest and is expected to sit about 220 km northeast of the island at 1 pm today, December 6, with the same wind strength. The typhoon will create violent rough seas and winds of 88-117 kph in the southeastern area of the East Sea, including the area east of Truong Sa. Near the typhoon’s eye, winds will be stronger, at over 132 kph. Over the next 24 hours, the storm may slow to 5-10 kph and change direction, first to the north, then to the east, south and southwest. Such complex movement will create a “knot” between the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagos, weakening the storm. If this occurs, the typhoon may not strike Vietnam, the center forecast.

Precautions The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control has asked local steering committees and authorities in coastal region from Da Nang City to Ba Ria-Vung Tau to prepare to cope with Typhoon Bopha. Local authorities and concerned agencies must keep all vessels at sea, especially those around Hoang Sa and Truong Sa, up to date on the storm’s movement. Border guard forces from central Da Nang city to southern Ca Mau province said they have informed about 46,600 boats with about 253,600 people on board about the storm so that they can take safety measures in time. The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Co-ordination Center has put five rescue boats on standby, two of which are in Da Nang, and one each in Nha Trang, Con Dao and Vung Tau. The Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department has sent diplomatic notes to the embassies of a number of regional countries including China, Indonesia, and Malaysia asking for their assistance in helping Vietnamese boats and fishermen find shelter in these countries when necessary.
