Society:

-- The Ministry of Justice has just banned their staff from smoking cigarettes in non-smoking areas, conference room, and areas with explosive hazards.

--   Ho Chi Minh City’s People Committee has required authorities in district 6 and district 11 to restructure their issuance of construction license for “super thin” or tiny houses that they said badly impact the beauty along Tan Hoa – Lo Gom canal.

-- Nearly 2,000 people from Hanoi, An Giang, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Khanh Hoa and soldiers and Civil Defense troops in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday joined a marathon along Nhieu Loc canal that used to be seriously polluted but now has been cleaned up.

-- Two people were killed and three others injured after they were truck by lightning while groping for snails at a shallow stream in Bao Thuan commune, Di Linh district in the central highlands province of Lam Dong.

-- An 11-grade student in Bu Gia Map district in the southern province of Binh Phuoc has been charged with kidnapping a 7-year-old boy with the intent to blackmail his parents.

-- A foreign vessel with five Cambodian crew members on board has been held off Kien Giang southern province for smuggling 10 tons of wood.

-- Three French tourists have been compensated with VND10 million (roughly US$500) by a hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter who had threatened to attack them. It has been reported that on April 24, the said tourists took a taxi to a hotel they had already booked in Hanoi’s Old Quarter but the taxi driver took them to a different hotel. The tourists then refused to stay there, so the hotel staff threatened to beat them.

- Four men suspected to assault residents in Dai Thang commune, Tien Lang district in Hai Phong northern city have been arrested and charged with “causing public disorders”, local police sources said.

-- A fire on Saturday hit a wood factory on Nguyen Duy Trinh Street, Ho Chi Minh City’s District 9, causing an estimated loss of billions of dong.

Lifestyle:

-- The opening ceremony of Da Nang international fireworks competition will take place at 8:20pm today (April 29) with the participation of five teams, including: Russia, Italia, Japan, the United States, and hosts Da Nang.

-- An exhibition claiming Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Spratly) and Truong Sa (Paracel) archipelagoes will take place at the campus of Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities from May 2 to 15.

-- Hue Traditional Craft festival opened on April 27. The festival is aimed at honoring and upholding the cultural value of local handicraft products.

Politics:

-- The international seminar on spotlighting Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes concluded on April 28 in Ly Son island district in the central province of Quang Ngai. According to VGP, during the event, the participants, including foreign scholars, stressed that Vietnam has legal documents which show that the country exercised sovereignty over the above archipelagoes at least since 17th century.
