Teen dies after losing hand in brutal street fight in Saigon

Sunday, March 13, 2016, 16:04 GMT+7

A teenager who lost his hand in a street clash in Ho Chi Minh City last week has died in hospital.

Police confirmed on Sunday that the victim, 17-year-old Bui Hoang Thien Phuong, drew his last breath the same day.

Phuong had had his hand chopped off on a street in Go Vap District on March 6, following an online conflict.

According to Go Vap police officers, the attack resulted from a prior confrontation on Facebook between the younger sister of 20-year-old Trinh Cong Dat and 19-year-old Lam Quang Thien’s girlfriend.

Dat and Thien took the fight offline, agreeing to meet each other in person at the Lang Hoa area in Go Vap.

Dat, together with his gang members Gia Phong, Bui Hoang Thien Phuong, and 18-year-old Nguyen Van Phong, set out to look for Thien’s gang to ‘talk.’

While Dat was refilling gasoline at a petrol station on Pham Van Chieu Street, Thien’s gang caught up with them and started slashing Phuong and Phong.

Phuong had his hand cut off and died in hospital early Sunday, while Phong sustained several injuries to his hands and legs but has started recovering.

Phuong’s death was confirmed this morning by a senior officer of Go Vap police.

According to the officer, Go Vap police have caught three suspects involved in the attack, who are 19-year-old Do Tuan Anh, 16-year-old Nguyen Huu Thien Long, and Thien.

“Up until now, only Tuan Anh has admitted to having been involved in the slashing of Phuong and Phong, but denied being the one striking the fatal blow that severed Phuong’s hand. Investigation is under way and Go Vap police are urging those involved to turn themselves in to receive leniency before the law,” he said.
