Rumors of cable car system to islet near Hoi An rejected

Rumors of cable car system to islet near Hoi An rejected

Authorities from the central province of Quang Nam have scotched rumors that they had approved the construction of a cable car system to bring tourists to Cham Islet.

Several cable car projects have been proposed at ecotourism attractions across Vietnam to allow more tourists to visit those places, most of which have been blasted for their potential negative impacts on the environment.

One such rumored project was to connect mainland Quang Nam with Cham Islet, one of the province’s must-see destinations next to the world-renowned Hoi An Ancient Town.

“We want to confirm that there is no cable car system to be built to Cham Islet, and we will also continue to restrict the number of visitors to the islet,” Dinh Hai, director of the Quang Nam tourism department, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Hanoi to announce plans for a Quang Nam Festival 2017 to be held next month, Hai said Quang Nam authorities would welcome all visitors to Cham Islet, but acknowledged its crucial responsibility to preserve the natural ecosystem on the small island.

“We will of course have to equip the islet with facilities and amenities to serve visitors, but the tourism development there will always be attached to the community and nature,” the tourism head said.

The sixth Quang Nam Festival, backed by the tourism ministry and Vietnam’s National UNESCO Committee, takes place from June 7 to 14 in the provincial cities of Tam Ky and Hoi An.

The event will feature multiple cultural, art and sports programs and activities, highlighted by an international choir competition with 1,500 artists from 15 countries, an international windsurfing competition and a boat race with 200 athletes from 30 nations.

Other activities include an exhibition on Vietnam’s seas and islands and separate festivals honoring bai choi folk games, Ngoc Linh ginseng and Quang Nam heritage.
