The cold weather was recorded across Vietnam on Monday morning due to the effect of a strong cold front, with mercury of below zero degrees Celsius reported on Fansipan peak in the northern region.
The temperatures in northern provinces continued to drop on Monday, with average lows of below 10 degrees Celsius recorded in the Red River Delta as of 6:00 am, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
Lows in Hanoi ranged from seven to 12 degrees Celsius, while the lowest mercury in Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, and Hai Duong was between 8.5 and 9.5 degrees Celsius.
In mountainous localities, temperatures dipped to under five degrees Celsius.
On top of the Fansipan Mountain in Lao Cai Province, the temperature of below zero degrees Celsius lingered from Sunday night to Monday morning, resulting in thick frost.
In north-central provinces, the average lows were about nine to 15 degrees Celsius.
Southern provinces also experienced the chilly weather on Monday morning.
The lowest mercury in Ho Chi Minh City was 22 degrees Celsius, Tay Ninh 20 degrees Celsius, Binh Duong and Dong Nai 21 degrees Celsius, Hau Giang 19.3 degrees Celsius, and Tra Vinh 19 degrees Celsius.
The lows in the Central Highlands were below 18 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures in many parts of the country will increase slowly on Monday.
However, mercury in northern and north-central localities will drop again at night.
