Police in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Dinh are investigating the death of a man which occurred after local officers carried out a raid on a an illegal gambling ring.

Pham Dinh Toan, 29, from Phuoc Hung Commune, Tuy Phuoc District, was found dead after police officers raided the ring on Monday night.

The body of Toan was returned to his family for funeral rituals on Tuesday morning, after competent agencies had conducted a post-mortem examination.

According to Pham Hoang Hau, Toan’s uncle, the victim went to a location near Dinh Thien Market to gamble with his friends, before the gang was seized by police officers at around 10:00 pm.

The gamblers attempted to flee the scene, Hau stated, adding that Toan was pursued and attacked by some of the law enforcers.

“They beat my nephew until he was unconscious. He later passed away on his way to the hospital,” the man claimed. “Toan did not drink and was in good shape. There is no way he could have died without being assaulted.”

The victim was the breadwinner for the family, working as a truck driver to support his wife and their young daughter, his older brother, Pham Dang Tien, said.

Tien has requested that authorities clarify the cause of Toan’s death in order to seek justice for the victim.

Meanwhile, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Vo Quy Tuan, chief of staff of the municipal Department of Police, said that a group of six officers in Tuy Phuoc District carried out the raid as per a plan to ensure social order ahead of the Lunar New Year.

The law enforcers spotted some 20 to 30 young men gambling near the market, who ran the moment they saw the officers, Tuan continued.

After everyone fleed, the officers inspected the scene and saw a man, later identified as Toan, sitting unmoving in front of a nearby house.

They tried to carry Toan to the hospital with the help of local residents but the effort was in vain, the police official said.

As soon as they understood that the victim had passed away, his family members and witnesses were infuriated and attacked the officers, injuring two of them.

According to Sen. Lt. Col. Tuan, those who assaulted the law enforcers will also be charged for their violence.
