Vietnamese officials reach strong consensus on candidates for Party chief post during plenum

A closed-door ballot was organized during the three-day 14th plenary meeting of Vietnam’s Party Central Committee, with its result showing officials’ overwhelming consensus on the candidates for the position of General Secretary for the next five-year tenure.
The meeting concluded on Wednesday afternoon after three days of working in Hanoi, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
Members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam thoroughly discussed and reviewed a report on personnel preparation at the meeting in a democratic and responsible manner, the news agency quoted incumbent Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong as saying at the closing ceremony.
The delegates carried out a secret ballot to present a high level of agreement on nominating the candidates for the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the next five-year term.
The nominees for the other key posts of leadership, including State President, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the National Assembly, were also considered by the members to be recommended to the National Assembly as per the law.
All preparations regarding personnel have been completed and shall be reported at the National Party Congress, due to take place from January 20 to 28.
In addition, the delegates carefully reviewed and voted to approve the potential members for the chairing delegation, the secretary board, and the delegate eligibility inspection group for the upcoming congress.
The Party Central Committees also discussed the Politburo’s report about the result of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement negotiations, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The TPP deal, reached on October 5 after marathon talks between the 12 party countries, aims to liberalize commerce in 40 percent of the world's economy. The participating nations are Peru, Chile, Mexico, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the U.S., and Vietnam.
The party countries are expected to officially sign the deal no later than the end of the first quarter of this year, after which their legislatures will begin the ratification process.
The Party Central Committee highly evaluated efforts by the government and competent authorities to conclude the negotiation for the pact.
Joining the TPP as one of the first members proves the essential role of Vietnam in terms of geographical and political aspects, bringing more opportunities for the sustainable development of the nation, the committee said.
