Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc is slated to arrive in Tokyo on Sunday, commencing his official visit aimed at strengthening the two nations’ relationship.

The aircraft carrying PM Phuc, his spouse, and a delegation of high-ranking officials is expected to land in the Japanese capital today.

During his stay in Japan from June 4 to 8, the Vietnamese head of government will join talks with local leaders and attend the 23rd International Conference on the Future of Asia.

This is the second visit to the East Asian country of PM Phuc since his appointment.

The first and successful trip took place from May 26 to 28, 2016 at the invitation of Japanese premier Shinzo Abe, which contributed to the enhancement of the Japan- Vietnam extensive strategic partnership.

On January 16 and 17, PM Abe also conducted an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart.

According to Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment, PM Phuc’s visit will focus on discussing measures to connect the two economies, and realize the important agreements previously signed by the two countries’ leaders.

Vietnam hopes to welcome further investment from Japanese businesses, Dung said, adding that a conference on the topic is scheduled to take place during the trip with the expected attendance of about 1,500 representatives from local businesses.

PM Phuc’s participation in the 23rd International Conference on the Future of Asia also reflects Vietnam’s respect and priority for the bilateral cooperation.

Following over 40 years of the two nations’ diplomatic relationship, Japan is now among the most essential partners of Vietnam.

The country has been funding the highest amount of official development assistance (ODA) in Vietnam, which accounts for 30 percent.

About 23 cooperative agreements have been signed between localities from the two countries.
