A 15-year-old Vietnamese boy, considered a child prodigy at home, has won the Special Prize at the Anniversary X International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Kazakhstan.

Tran Le Quang Tien was ranked eighth overall and awarded the “Diplom Special Prize for The Best Interpretation of a Contemporary Work” in the competition named after Russian composer Tchaikovsky.

The gold medals went to Eugene Kawai of Japan and South Korea’s Nakyung Kang.

Tien was the only Vietnamese representative among more than 300 contestants at the competition, running from June 15 to 25 in the Kazakhstani capital of Astana.

The Vietnamese violinist was honored with the special award for his impressive performance of Bai Ca Chim Ung (Eagle’s Song) by local musician Dam Linh.

According to Vietnamese violinist Bui Cong Duy, one of the 12 judges at the contest, this is the first time in 20 years that Vietnam has had a representative in the Tchaikovsky competition and won a prize.

In 2016, Tien won first prize at the International Violin Competition in Kazakhstan.

The largest professional competition for young musicians under the age of 17, the Anniversary X International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians this year consisted of three sections, piano, violin and cello.
