The delegation was led by Deputy Director of the Vietnamese Defense Ministry’s Institute of International Relations, Colonel Nguyen Thanh Dong.

Participants, including defense and diplomatic officials from ASEAN member countries, the EU, and ASEAN’s dialogue partners, exchanged ways to broaden mutual understanding and foster trust through the ASEAN Regional Forum on defense.

In his speech at the dialogue, Colonel Dong insisted on ensuring maritime security in the Asia-Pacific region, where a number of traditional and non-traditional security issues, including territorial disputes, relational conflicts, terrorism, trans-national crime and food security are posing challenges to all countries in the area. The Vietnamese official also noted that territorial disputes in the East Sea and the East China Sea are complex. In order to avoid clashes, ASEAN has implemented many initiatives, such as setting up hotlines, pledging not to use force, and strictly obeying the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) with a view to the approval of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), Dong said.

The colonel emphasized Vietnam always maintains its consistent point of view on solving all disputes via peaceful means based on international law. He added that Vietnam as a coastal country is at all times ready to take part in sea-related cooperation activities.
