Police in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday said they had arrested six teen members of a gang who stabbed and robbed two foreigners ten days ago, local media reported.

Huynh Huu Loc, 14, Pham Ngoc Thanh, 13, Nguyen Huu Tai, 12, and three others including Vo Tuan Kiet, Nguyen Cong Tan, Le Van Thanh Hung – all aged 15 – were nabbed on Monday, police in District 1 said.

Police officers added that are hunting two other members of the ring.

The victims were Sebastian Graetz, of German nationality, and Yekateriba Ponomarenko, a Kazakhstani woman.

According to the case file, at 2:00 am on October 19, the gang began traveling around streets in the district to look for “prey.”

About an hour later, they detected the two foreigners sitting on a motorbike along the Tau Hu Canal on Vo Van Kiet Avenue.

The gang immediately got close to the two and Tai pressed a knife against the neck of the foreign man to rob him and the woman.

When Graetz resisted, Tai stabbed him many times on his head and back, causing the knife to break, while the other gang members used stones to strike the foreigner in the shoulder and back.

During the attack, Kiet took two handbags from the couple and he along with other gang members escaped.

The bags contained a cellphone, a camera lens and VND600,000 (US$27) in cash.

They gang later sold the lens for VND700,000 ($31.5).

On October 26, the gang assaulted another couple, Vong Luong Nhi, 22, and Pham Thi Ngoc Ven, 22, who are Vietnamese, along the same canal.

Loc and Kiet used knives to press against the necks of Nhi and Ven and then put a gag in their mouths, while the other gang members searched their handbags and took away three cellphones, VND2 million ($90) in cash, and a motorbike key.

At that time, a police team from District 1 that was on patrol nearby detected the robbers’ acts and rushed to the scene to seize them.

The ring members then admitted to police officers that they had knifed and robbed the two foreigners.

Yesterday, the district police returned the cellphone and the camera lens to Sebastian Graetz, who thanked them for their detection and arrest of the robbers and the recovery of his lost assets.
