Five die, 8 missing in flash flood in Lao Cai

At least 5 people were reported to die and 8 others are missing after a flash flood caused by torrential rains swept through two hamlets in the northern province of Lao Cai yesterday morning, local authorities said. The disaster, which occurred at 3 am Friday, also swept away tens of houses, destroyed more than 10 hectares of rice, and damaged many traffic and irrigation systems in Nam Cham and Nam Nhu hamlets in Nam Luc Commune, Bac Ha District, said Co Van Dat, chairman of the commune People’s Committee. Most of the victims are ethnic minority people in Nam Nhu, and rescue forces had found five dead bodies by yesterday afternoon, and are searching for those still missing, said Dang Van Khoa, an official of the district People’s Committee. Heavy downpours also caused landslides, with some 40 cubic meters of land and soil poured onto the railway route in the province’s Bao Thang District, blocking two trains running from Hanoi to Lao Cai. About 40 workers were mobilized to clear the track for three hours.

Located 12 km from the center of Nam Luc Commune, Nam Nhu hamlet is a remote mountainous area where traffic system is in poor condition and telecommunication links are very weak. The hamlet’s population is dominated by ethnic minority peoples.
