Typhoon Nock-ten to strike East Vietnam Sea next week

Sunday, December 25, 2016, 10:04 GMT+7

A tropical storm forming east of the Philippines has been forecast to enter the East Vietnam Sea in the next few days, carrying strong winds.

Typhoon Nock-ten can be considered a superstorm packing winds of 180km per hour and squalls of up to 220 km an hour, the National Center for Hydro- meteorological Forecasting said, adding that the storm would reach the East Vietnam Sea on Monday night.

The tempest was located some 350 kilometers east of the Philippine islands on Saturday night and moving westward.

It is anticipated to weaken as it passes the eastern ocean of the Philippines on Sunday, before speeding up and making landfall on Luzon Island on Monday.

The storm will enter the southern part of the East Vietnam Sea later the same day, carrying winds of 134-149km per hour.

Weather forecast centers from Japan and the United States said that Nock-ten, upon its arrival in the maritime area, would travel northwest and later southwest.

According to the National Center for Hydro- meteorological Forecasting, under the combined effect of the storm circulation and a cold front from the north, central Vietnam is expected to be dampened by heavy rain, between 100 and 300 millimeters, from December 28 to January 2, 2017, with high risk of flooding also anticipated.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the Philippines have been evacuated.

Meanwhile, northern Vietnamese provinces will be affected by a cold spell on Tuesday morning.

Light showers are forecast while rough seas are also predicted with winds of around 60km per hour in the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea.

Average temperatures in the mainland, including Hanoi, will be around 11 to 13 degrees Celsius and between six and eight degrees Celsius in mountainous areas.

It will be two to five degrees Celsius in some localities at higher altitudes.
