Ho Chi Minh City’s top leader removed from Vietnam’s Politburo

The Ho Chi Minh City Party chief Dinh La Thang has been warned and dismissed from the Politburo of the Party Central Committee for multiple financial wrongdoings he had committed when leading Vietnam’s oil and gas behemoth.

The disciplinary actions against Thang were announced on the third working day of the 12th Party Central Committee’s fifth session on Sunday.

In late April, the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission proposed that disciplinary measures be taken against Thang for his role in the misconduct of the state-run National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) during the 2009-11 period.

At Sunday’s meeting, the inspection commission’s chairman Tran Quoc Vuong presented a Politburo report on the punishment to be meted out to Thang, with more than 90 percent of the participants voting to approve the punitive measures proposed for the 57-year-old official.

According to the Party Central Committee, Thang committed “very serious wrongdoings and violations in management” as a member of the 10th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, secretary of the Party Committee and chairman of the board of PetroVietnam from 2009 to 2011.

The committee said Thang’s punishment was set on the grounds that his misconduct and violations have hurt the reputation of Party organizations, his personal reputation and caused a loss of confidence among the people and other Party members.

In February 2016, Thang, then working as minister of transport, was appointed secretary of the Party Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. A Party Committee is the leading organ of the Communist Party of Vietnam in each of the country’s cities and provinces.

Before becoming the minister of transport in August 2011, he was chairman of PetroVietnam, deputy Party secretary for Thua Thien-Hue Province (2003-2005) and chairman of Song Da Corporation (2001-2003).
