Fines for food safety violations mount to $1mn in Hanoi in 2022

Only 81.1 percent of the inspected facilities met food safety requirements

The Hanoi Department of Health has fined 1,403 facilities a combined VND24.8 billion (US$1 million) for food safety violations this year.

The department said in its year-end report that it had established about 1,000 teams of inspectors who examined 57,653 facilities this year.

Results of these inspections showed that 46,765 facilities, or 81.1 percent of the total, met food safety requirements, while more than 10,000 establishments violated regulations.

Of those 10,000, 1,403 facilities were slapped with fines totaling nearly VND24.8 billion.

Four others are under investigation.

The main violations were failure to obtain a valid certificate of food safety, failure to conduct health check-ups and food safety training for employees, failure to ensure a one-way circulation of food, selling food products of unknown origin, and failure to ensure food safety.

Some 8,000 food businesses made basic mistakes such as wearing masks incorrectly during food contact, failure to ensure nail hygiene, and wearing jewelry when participating in food processing.

The municipal health department plans continue carrying out more inspections over the next three months, from December 15 to March 12, 2023.
