The island city of Phu Quoc, off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, has experienced excessive rainfall and heavy flooding over the past few days due to the impact of typhoon Talim, the first tropical storm to hit Vietnam this year.
Flooding struck Cua Duong, Cua Can, Duong To Communes and part of Duong Dong Commune, said Colonel Le Duc Hai, political commissar at the city’s Military Command, on Friday.
Close to 100 soldiers and police officers were dispatched to flooded locations to promptly evacuate the elderly, children, as well as properties and cattle of local people to safer places.
On Wednesday and Thursday, heavy downpours and high waves left an embankment of a local household sinking in Duong Dong, causing damage of over VND100 million (US$4,240).
Many houses, properties, cattle herds, and poultry flocks were submerged in rainwater.
