A court in northern Vietnam’s Thai Nguyen Province sentenced a former commune chairman to three years in prison on Wednesday after he slaughtered a tiger to make bone glues.
Ngo Van Quan, 52, from Tien Phong Commune, Pho Yen City, Thai Nguyen, received the jail sentence for the charge of 'violations on the protection of endangered, precious, and rare animals.'
His two accomplices, Nguyen Van Nam, 28, a current resident of Phu Binh District, and Nguyen Van Thang, 43, from Pho Yen City, were handed suspended sentences of 15 months and 12 months in prison, respectively.
In January 2022, police officers caught the three men red-handed slaughtering a tiger at Quan’s house, where one frozen tiger, one tiger head, two tiger skins, four tiger limbs, 16 bags of tiger meat, one frozen chamois head, 1,578 packs of bone glues, and 21 glass jars of bear bile were also found.
At the time of the discovery, Quan was the chairman of Tien Phong Commune.
