Ho Chi Minh City hospital performs successful surgery on Nigerian with 3-week-old tibial fracture

The man had not received proper treatment for three weeks

Thu Duc City Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City successfully performed surgery on a 36-year-old Nigerian man who had suffered a fractured tibial plateau for three weeks.

The man, a resident of Thu Duc City, sustained the injury while playing football and visited several medical facilities and sports medicine specialists but did not receive effective treatment.

Three weeks after the injury, he was diagnosed with a Schatzker III type tibial plateau fracture at Thu Duc City Hospital and was advised to undergo a surgery.

Dr. Nguyen Duy Tai, who led the surgery, described the procedure as challenging due to significant displacement of the fractured bone and joint surface.

The patient had arrived with fibrous tissue in the joint, and the fracture site was beginning to form callus, causing the broken pieces to stick together.

The surgical team had to remove the callus and lift the fracture and joint surface.

They then performed an autograft procedure to fill the bone defect.

Minimally invasive techniques were employed to reduce tissue damage, along with supportive measures including prophylactic antibiotics, spinal anesthesia with sedation, and blood pressure control.

The patient’s condition is improving post-surgery, and he is undergoing physical therapy to regain mobility.
