The developer of an urban railway in Hanoi seems unwilling to cough up the dough to hire a map planner for the multimillion-dollar project, at least according to one local third-year student.
Dao Manh Son realized his work had been ‘stolen’ in early May by the management unit of the Cat Linh – Ha Dong elevated railway when La Khe, one of the terminals of the Chinese-contracted project, opened for public examination.
Son, a student at the Hanoi-based National Economics University then filed his complaint to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
In November 20126, Son drew a map featuring the stops and terminals planned for the urban railway in the capital to use as the photo illustration for a Wikipedia article.

He was shocked in May 2017 when he visited the La Khe terminal and saw his map on display in seven locations scattered throughout the facility, despite the fact that “[my map] contains some errors that I have yet to update,” the third-year student told Tuoi Tre.
The uncorrected errors include terminals that have not been marked and “several stops that have been renamed by the project developer but are still shown on the map with their old names,” Son elaborated.
“While our government is encouraging people to pay due respect to intellectual property protection, it is unacceptable that the management board of the Cat Linh – Ha Dong urban railway used my map without permission,” Son angrily said.

If Son was looking for an apology, it doesn’t look like it’ll come any time soon.
Vu Hong Phuong, deputy director of the project’s management board, admitted to Tuoi Tre that the company reviewed map at La Khe terminal upon receiving the complaint and “found that the main contractor had got the photo from Google and did not know of its author.”
Addressing Son’s complaint, Phuong said “if the author insists to be credited, we will add his name below the map.”
“Otherwise we will have the map removed from the terminal.”
