The suspect in the murder of an American tourist in Ho Chi Minh City late last month turned himself in to police on Tuesday, after hiding for more than a week.
Trinh Quoc Hung, aka Cu Ki, has been arrested on charges of murder for killing U.S. national Pendeeton Marshall Stephen on June 21, according to Ho Chi Minh City police.
Hung, 20, confessed to officers that he had fatally stabbed the 22-year-old foreign tourist after quarreling with him on Bui Vien Street, located in the heart of the city's ‘backpacker area,’ before running away.
Hung said he and Stephen had known each other for a while and had met several times to trade in drugs.
At 8:50 pm on June 21, Stephen came across Hung in an alley on Bui Vien and complained that the Vietnamese had sold fake drugs to him. He then asked for a refund.
The two quickly got into a row, with Hung eventually grabbing an iron bar and stabbing the U.S. national in the back to death.
Hung fled the scene immediately. Ever since, he has been hiding in several parks in Ho Chi Minh City.
On Tuesday, apparently believing that he could not run away forever, Hung turned himself in to the police.
