A 14-minute animated video on Saigon made by a local student has become well-received by netizens and widely-shared on social networks.
Titled “Toi Yeu Saigon” (I love Saigon), the clip is the graduation project of Van Lang University’s Bui Pham Thanh Tu. Mentioning the city’s high population density, the video explains the special reason that makes people keep rushing to Saigon through dividing the video into three parts depicting the most crowded city’s history, geography and culture.
“Saigon [Ho Chi Minh City] is located in southern Vietnam, the centre of South East Asia,” the video starts. “Saigon doesn’t distinguish who you are and where you’re from. When you’re living Saigon, you are Saigonese.”
In just a few minutes, “Toi Yeu Saigon” gives an easy-to-catch-up overview of the city’s history and geography as well as how these factors have an influence on the Saigonese’s personalities.
“People in Saigon, both in the past and present, are liberal. They live simply, think less and always welcome new things,” the video defines Saigonese.
In the clip, Saigon is described as a city of diversity since it gathers cultures of not only many regions in the country but also many countries in the world. A typical example is its cuisine. People can easily find foods of India, France, Germany, Japan, Korea and many other countries. It’s also not hard to find local specialties from other localities in this southern city.
Banh mi (bread), com tam (broken rice), ice tea, sugarcane juice, street foods or 30/4 Park in downtown Saigon are also mentioned in the video.
Ten days after being posted on YouTube, “Toi Yeu Saigon” has received 26,506 views with nearly 1,500 likes.
Besides giving compliments on the graphics and techniques used in the video, many viewers expressed their love to Saigon after watching the clip.
“We’re Saigonese and we’re proud to say so,” Kha Huynh commented on YouTube.
“The detailed information in the video proves how hard the maker studied Saigon. It’s an amazing clip even though the narration is not pretty good. I want to say thanks to the clip’s maker for making me, a Saigonese, love my city more,” Teddy Nguyen wrote.
