An expat Vietnamese-directed film, which brilliantly fuses the apocalypticsci-fi, thriller and romance genres, will be shown at the “non-competitive” Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF) in California next month.

“Nuoc” (2030) by Vietnamese-American director Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh, will be screened at the 37th festival, set to run from October 2 to 12.

Minh’s film, which belongs to the festival’s World Cinema category, will hit the screen on October 9 and 10.

An adaptation of a popular short story by local writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu, “Nuoc” was selected for the 2014 International Film Festival Berlin’s Panorama category, which honors works with unique esthetic perspectives.

The 98-minute film is set in the year 2030, when most of the cultivable land in southern Vietnam is below sea level due to extreme climate change.

Film critics noted that the film boasts an alluring storyline, stunning images of the sea, and a topical message regarding environmental protection.

The film’s screenings at the Berlin festival’s three different cinemas were all packed.

A number of Vietnamese-German and native audience members even sat on the floor to watch the film, while several others who were late stood outside to enjoy it.

“Though climatic change has sparked increasing concerns worldwide, the issue has yet to earn its due attention in several places, including Vietnam. Hopefully my film would help raise an alarm among such communities,” shared Minh, the director.

Minh’s other film, “Mua Len Trau” (Buffalo Boy), has been featured at several international film festivals and won several awards.

First launched in 1977, the Mill Valley Film Festival celebrates works by distinguished artists and innovators from all over the world, but does not hand out awards.

Such Oscar-winning films as “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The King’s Speech,” “The Artist,” “Argo,” and “12 Years a Slave” were all screened at MVFF.

The American festival draws some 200 filmmakers from 50 countries and territories each year.
