Man dies after being abducted by debt collectors in Vietnam’s Central Highlands

The victim agreed to pay off the debt some of his relatives owed to a person but ended up in death

A middle-aged man in Vietnam’s Central Highlands died on Thursday after being abducted by debt collectors a day earlier, police said.

The man, Le Dinh Huu P. in Gia Lai Province, agreed to settle the VND100 million ($4,300) debt on behalf of two of his relatives, who had lost a bet in illegal cock fighting, according to the 55-year-old victim’s family.

He made the decision because he thought they were unable to pay off the money, the family said.

As of last December, the creditor to P’s relatives visited his house on multiple occasions to put pressure on him to clear the debt.

He also took P’s pick-up away for the purpose.

On Wednesday afternoon the creditor came to P.’s home again but this time he arrived in a car and was accompanied by five people, the family members said.

The group fired multiple shots in the air and hit P. before forcing him into the vehicle and fled the scene.

P’s family later suddenly learned that he was being treated at a hospital for a number of wounds.

He died on Thursday from what doctors said were liver and brain injuries.

Local police opened an investigation and have arrested two suspects in the case.
