Ten Vietnamese enterprises have made their presence in the Asia's 200 Best Under A Billion list released Wednesday by finance magazine Forbes.

The annual selection is aimed at honoring public companies in the Asia Pacific region with annual revenue between US$5 million and $1 billion, according to Forbes.

Of the Vietnamese companies in the list, Ninh Hoa Sugar JSC had the largest 2012 revenues, US$45 million, and the Educational Book JSC in Ha Noi had the smallest, $7 million. See the full list at the end of this story.

Forbes said the enterprises in the Asia’s 200 Best Under A Billion list have been drawn from databases of 15,000 stock-traded companies in Asia-Pacific that meet the revenue standard.

The selected firms also satisfied the following criteria: five-year average return on equity and pretax margin greater than 10 percent, positive sales and earnings per share growth for both the most recent fiscal one and three-year periods, debt less than 75 percent of shareholders’ equity, and a trading history of at least one year, according to Forbes.

“The final list of 200 is not ranked, but qualified firms are measured comparatively. Only 52 of the 200 repeat from last year, although a dozen others returned to the BUB from lists previous to that,” it said.

China and Hong Kong firms dominate the list with 63 names, as it did last year, while Japan comes next with 17 slots. Slowdown-hit India, with 19 selections, fell to its lowest level since 2007, Forbes said in a press release.

Booming Philippines scored only one, while Vietnam, by contrast, has 10 names on the list as it struggled “to regain recent economic-growth rates,” Forbes commented.

With 10 representatives, Vietnam stands at the #8 rank out of 13 countries and territories whose companies are in the list, behind Australia (12 slots) and above Thailand (8 selections).
