Vietnam to announce new president, premier next month

Vietnam to announce new president, premier next month

Saturday, March 26, 2016, 08:34 GMT+7

Vietnam’s State President and Prime Minister for the 2016-20 term will be named during the plenary meeting of the country’s legislative body scheduled for March 21 and April 12.

The 11th meeting of the National Assembly will include many important tasks, especially the election of the three leadership posts, namely State President, Prime Minister and National Assembly Chairperson, for the new tenure, Nguyen Sinh Hung, incumbent chairman of the legislative body, said at the opening session.

Delegates will also review the activities and leadership of state agencies of the 2011-15 period and discuss socio-economic development plans for the next five years, Chairman Hung added.

The election process for the three leadership positions as well as heads of other state agencies is scheduled to be carried out in over ten days, from March 30 to April 12.

The procedure will be completed about three months earlier than expected, as originally state leaders were to be endorsed during the first meeting of the new National Assembly in July, after its members are voted in May.

The work is now slated to be concluded sooner as previous holders of several leadership posts did not sign up for re-election, Nguyen Hanh Phuc, general secretary of the National Assembly, was quoted by VnExpress as saying at a press meeting on March 18.

It would take too long if the endorsement is only conducted in July, Phuc continued, adding that 2016 is the first year of the implementation of the new Party Resolution, thus a new spirit and impetus is needed.

According to the agenda of the ongoing meeting, a ballot shall be carried out to decide on the new National Assembly Chairperson on March 31.

Similarly, the State President and Prime Minister of the next five-year term will be named on April 2 and 7, respectively.

The nominees are Tran Dai Quang, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan for the positions of State President, Prime Minister, and National Assembly Chairperson respectively.

Quang is the incumbent minister of public security, Phuc is one of the current five deputy prime ministers, and Ngan is the vice chairwoman of the National Assembly for the current term.

Nguyen Phu Trong has already been announced as the new tenure’s General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam during the National Party Congress in January, after he was re-elected for a second term.
