A physiotherapist in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Can Tho Province performed amputation on his own left leg under the influence of crystal meth and a psychological disorder, local police said Saturday.

The 27-year-old victim, P.D.K., works as a physiotherapist at Cai Rang Hospital in Can Tho City, and has been diagnosed with body integrity identity disorder (BIID), a psychological disorder that makes an otherwise healthy individual feel that they are meant to be disabled.

K. waited until 5:20 pm on Thursday, when his co-workers had left for home, before locking himself alone in the room and heading for the toilet to perform the amputation with a knife, according to police report.

The mentally challenged man reportedly drained all the blood off his amputated leg in order to prevent any future attempts to replant the leg.

Local police said K. had thought about faking a traffic accident to cover up his action, but opted instead for hiding the leg inside a headboard compartment of his bed.

K. then called another hospital employee on the phone, saying he had been amputated by someone else in his sleep. The employee than notified the whole ward, who found the leg after some search effort.

Interrogations by local police found K. fully aware of his disorder since a young age, but had refused to disclose his illness to others. The man has been doing research on his condition since starting medical school.

K. would not be charged for his self-harm, as the action was carried out alone and was the result of a medical condition, police said.
