Two teams of primary school students from Vietnam took home first-place prizes at the 2016 International Robothon competition in Malaysia on Sunday.

Students from Tran Cao Van and Le Quy Don Elementary Schools in the central city of Da Nang were crowned champions in the Apprentice and Veteran categories of the international competition to challenge creative problem-solving skills by designing and building robots.

Two second-place, two third-place, and five consolation prizes were also won by Vietnamese teams in the contest.

They were among 53 teams of primary and junior high school students in Southeast Asia who had been shortlisted from national rounds in their respective home countries.

In Vietnam, the teams were selected through competitions held in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang by local educational departments and the DTT Eduspec education firm.

The annual competition alternates hosts between Southeast Asian countries as part of the Digital Campus organized by Youth On Unity (Y.O.U), a Malaysia-based non-profit organization dedicated to the social, educational and physical development of young people.

Themed ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT), the 2016 Robothon was a challenge for students to compete and learn creative problem-solving skills through designing, building, and programming robots that can execute multiple tasks faced by engineers.

Students were also asked to incorporate groundbreaking technologies in solving these complex problems.
