Vincom Center A’s nostalgic renaming plan delayed

Vincom Center A’s nostalgic renaming plan delayed

The plan to rename the Ho Chi Minh City-based shopping mall Vincom Center A after the erstwhile name of the street on which it stands has been delayed, the new operator of the venue announced Sunday.

The mall was supposed to take the new name today.

Tuong Lai Co Ltd, which acquired the center from Vingroup by buying its entire stake over a US$215 million deal last month, said it had to delay the plan as the task of placing a new banner and other relevant constructions remain unfinished.

The company previously intended to rename the building into Catinat, the former name of the bustling Dong Khoi Street, where it is located, but confirmed in a press release on Sunday that this name will no longer be used over a “sensitive matter.”

“Catinat is in fact one of a handful of names we are considering in renaming the building,” the document reads.

The company said it seeks to choose “a memorable name that suits the high-class level of the building and helps facilitate its branding and business activities.”

It has been reported that Vingroup raked in a post-tax profit of VND4.3 trillion ($215 million) from selling the Vincom Center A.

Vincom Center A is a luxurious shopping mall located on a prime site in HCMC’s District 1, surrounded by Le Thanh Ton, Dong Khoi, Le Loi and Nguyen Hue streets.

It has nine floors and six basements, with four floors for a high-end retail mall and a five-star hotel from the fifth floor upwards.
