Vietnamese no-frills airline VietJet Air has been voted as one of Asia’s ten best budget carriers by Smart Travel Asia readers, the airline announced Thursday.

The Hanoi-based carrier shared the ninth post with Thailand’s Nok Air in the “Top 10 Budget Airlines” in the tenth annual 2014 Best In Travel Poll conducted by Smart Travel Asia, one of the region’s most dedicated online travel magazine, according to VietJet Air.

AirAsia tops the list, which also includes other most established airlines in Asia such as Cebu Pacific and Tiger Airways.

Only the most knowledgeable voters with substantial hands-on travel experience – who took on average 12 annual air trips in Asia – can take part in the 2014 Best in Travel Poll, which were open to votes from May to July 2014, according to Smart Travel Asia, which now has over one million readers worldwide.

Approximately 70 percent of the voters were based in Asia, largely Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, India, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and the Middle East, 15 percent in UK/Europe and 15 percent in USA and North America, according to the online magazine.

Smart Travel Asia offers a huge resource for global travelers with an abundance of information on tourism experiences, air services, hotels, resorts, and tourist attractions.

“We are truly delighted to be named as one of Asia’s best budget airlines by Smart Travel Asia’s well-traveled readers,” Vietjet Air managing director Luu Duc Khanh said in a statement.

Khanh said the airline hopes to win more support from tourists in the future with its low-cost policy.

In September, VietJet Air was also named one of the “Top 10 most famous brands in Vietnam 2014” by the International Intellectual Property Institute and Vietnam Science and Entrepreneurs’ Union, according to the airline.

The low-cost carrier said it is poised to receive three more brand new, modern Airbus aircraft, which will help to expand its network and offer travelers more flying opportunities at reasonable fares across Asia.

VietJet Air currently operates more than 770 flights on 21 local and international routes a week.

The airline now flies between Vietnam’s major cities -- Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, Hai Phong, and Da Nang – and Asian key destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, and Busan.
