Ho Chi Minh City flower markets ready for Lunar New Year

Wednesday, February 04, 2015, 10:19 GMT+7

Flower markets in Ho Chi Minh City are gearing up for the upcoming Tet holiday, which will arrive in two weeks, with flowers transported from other regions to the southern hub for sale at prices ranging from VND70,000 (US$3.30) to VND100 million ($4,800).

Decorating houses with flowers has long been a custom for Vietnamese to celebrate Tet, the Vietnamese term for the Lunar New Year, in which hoa dao (peach blossom) are commonly displayed in the northern region while hoa mai (yellow apricot blossom) represent southern culture.

Other plants that Vietnamese often choose to decorate their home during Tet include kumquat, yellow daisy, chrysanthemum, chrysanthemum morifolium, celosia, moth orchid and bonsais.

The peach blossom flowers are transported from northern localities like Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, and Hai Duong Provinces to the southern city.

Other plants are mostly grown in Mekong Delta provinces and the Central Highlands city of Da Lat.

Tet falls on February 19 this year, with festive preparations beginning around one week before the date and the celebratory atmosphere lingering another week after that.
