Con Cung, a Vietnamese baby and mom store chain suspected of selling products under altered labels, has been cleared from the allegations, but found with other regulation violations, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has concluded.

Con Cung did not dishonestly label its products or sell fake or smuggled goods, the ministry said in a statement on Friday, concluding its inspection into the retail store chain specializing in products for mothers and babies under seven years old.

The inspection was carried out from July 30 to August 10, after the baby and mom store chain made headlines on July 21, following a complaint of a customer, who had found a sign of dishonest labeling on a piece of clothing he had bought from Con Cung.

Truong Dinh Cong Vinh purchased a baby girl clothing set worth VND329,000 (US$14.15) at a Con Cung outlet at 788 Au Co Street, Ward 14, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City in May.

Vinh suspected that the product had its original tag removed and replaced with a new one, which reads “CF - Made in Thailand."

Con Cung sells its clothing product line, sourced by manufacturers in Thailand, under the brand CF, standing for “Con Cung Fashion."

It is not clear what the original tag on the product bought by Vinh may read.

However, based on the results of inspecting 75 samples of Con Cung’s products, the market watchdog confirmed that the company strictly complies with the provisions of law in protecting the interest of consumers, the quality of products and the origin of goods.

The inspection team also found that the import documents of the company are valid as per the laws.

Yet the retail brand did commit some acts of infringement, including violating regulations on product labeling, promotion and operating e-commerce website, according to the trade ministry’s statement.

Particularly, some products on sale or kept in the company's warehouse are domestically produced, which are required to be labeled “Xuat xu Viet Nam,” while the company uses the English translation, “Made in Vietnam”.

Some products also fell short of information required on goods labeling.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has tasked the Market Surveillance Agency and its unit with handling these administrative violations as per the law.

For Con Cung, it was required to take measures to resolve the detected violations, to continue to review its observance in business activities, and to report the results to the ministry and competent agencies.

The company was also asked to correct the products with violated labels before putting them into the market again.

Con Cung is currently the largest chain of its kind in the market with 350 outlets nationwide, including 315 shops under the eponymous brand and 35 ToyCity stores focusing on selling toys for kids.
