Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the administration of Khanh Hoa Province plan to spend VND450 billion (over US$19 million) upgrading the Hon Ro fishing port in the provincial capital of Nha Trang.

Of the amount, the south-central province will contribute VND200 billion ($8.5 million) to develop the local seafood market and the fishing port into a Grade-I fishing port, Nguyen Tan Tuan, chairman of the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee, said on Wednesday.

The Hon Ro fishing port will be widened by an additional 1.6 hectares.

In December last year, the agriculture ministry passed a public investment plan, as per which VND250 billion ($10.6 million) would be spent on developing a storm shelter for fishing boats in the Tac River and upgrading the Hon Ro fishing port.

The shelter is projected to be able to harbor roughly 1,500 fishing boats.

Accordingly, VND450 billion will be provided to upgrade the fishing port, which is expected to become a driving force for the south-central region.

Built 22 years ago, the Hon Ro fishing port was only renovated in 2014 during which it was equipped with canopies and a bridge.

The Grade-II fishing port spans 2.4 hectares, but the number of boats docking or sheltering from storms at the port surpassed its capacity, making the port unable to satisfy the demand for developing fishing services in the areas.

Aside from the overload, some facilities at the port also deteriorated or were out of order.

In November 2015, the Vietnamese prime minister approved a national master plan on the development of fishing ports and storm shelters until 2020, with a vision toward 2030.

In this plan, the Hon Ro fishing port would be upgraded into a Grade-I fishing port and serve as a driving force of the south-central region’s economic growth by 2020.

Its total area will cover at least four hectares, while equipment to load and unload commodities at the port must be entirely automated.
