While his school is closed due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, an art teacher in the central city of Da Nang has been giving the place a makeover with murals painted by himself.

Every day for the past week, Truong Hoang Thanh has been visiting Nui Thanh Elementary School in Hai Chau District, Da Nang, where he works as a teacher of fine arts, to work on his paintings on walls and pillars at the venue.

The teacher also used old car tires as one of the materials for his ocean-themed murals.

"I am a teacher, and I feel empty when I cannot come to class and see my students," Thanh expressed.

"I'm making this as a welcome 'gift' to the kids when they come back [from the school break]," he explained.

Schools in Vietnam have been closed since early February owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The administration of Da Nang announced last week K-12 students in the central city would continue to be off from school until further notice.

According to Nui Thanh Elementary School's principal Huynh Thi Thu Nguyet, Thanh has been doing his work voluntarily.

Thanh's murals have received positive feedback from people across the country after they were photographed and shared on social networks.

Some schools have even contacted the art teacher to ask for his advice on creating similar murals.

This is not the first time Thanh has done murals at his school.

Earlier, he had finished a series of paintings featuring Vietnamese folk games on the school's walls, entitled 'Childhood Garden.'
