“Gangnam Style,” a single by South Korean rapper PSY, has recently stormed across the world, reaching over 300 million views on Youtube nearly three months after it was released on July 15.

The video featuring Psy performing the so-called "horse dance," similar to riding a horse, has gone viral, and many international pop stars have tweeted and commented on the wacky performance.

The song has been number one on South Korea's major music charts for over three weeks and is also high on the iTunes store in the US, Canada, Finland, New Zealand and Denmark. On September 20, "Gangnam Style" was recognized by Guinness World Records as the "Most 'Liked' Video in YouTube history.”

Fans all over the world have created parody versions of the song and posted them on YouTube to share with others. In Vietnam many people, especially youths, have also become overexcited by the music video and its phenomenal dance.

“Gangnam Style” comes to schools

Not only has it been shared at the speed of light on social networks, the “horse riding” dance has caused a stir among local youths as well, and they have made many dance covers of the song.

At an event at Hanoi’s Tran Nhan Tong High School early last month, a group of five students took the stage and performed the famous dance moves of “Gangnam Style”. The clip capturing the performance has received positive responses from young viewers, who said the dance cheered up the show that day.

In another school in Hanoi, the National University of Civil Engineering, senior students last week also performed a cover of the song on the school’s campus to welcome freshmen. The performance attracted hundreds of students who were excited to see the dancing. Some first year students expressed that it was a meaningful and interesting welcome ceremony for them.

Dance like you’re riding horse, then propose

On September 24, a 6-minute video featuring a special proposal from a man in Hai Phong with “Gangnam Style” in the background went viral after it was posted on Youtube.

In the clip, Huy takes his girlfriend Giang to a cinema where people were holding a contest for couples. Huy and Giang joined in and the girl had to be blindfolded. After she opened her eyes, Giang was surprised see her boyfriend performing the “horse riding” dance of “Gangnam Style with people at the venue.

Huy then gave her a bouquet of roses, went down on his knees and asked her to marry him. The story finally ended like a fairy tale when Huy received a big yes from the love of his life.

The love of Giang and Huy has been praised by netizens. “Wish you guys always happy. Hope I can do something similar to my girl one day,” Ysyb17100 shared.

“Riding invisible horses” to set record

Organizers of the community dance performance titled “Hay Cung Hat Vang” (Let’s Sing Aloud) to be held this week have decided to use “Gangnam Style” to open their event after seeing around 100 local youths taking part in the dance at Lenin Park in Hanoi on September 29.

The event, which is planned to be organized at My Dinh Stadium on October 7, expects to see the participation of around 100,000 people. So far more than 30,000 people have registered to take part.

A number of local artists, including singers Anh Quan, Anh Khang, and Emily, model Adrea and actor Baggio have also confirmed their participation.

According to the organizers, besides the aim of recognition from the Vietnam Book of Records as the biggest dancing and singing event in the country’s history, the event also aims to connect people in the community as well as build a fund to help disadvantaged people.

They also expressed the hope that the “Gangnam Style” performance of “Hay Cung Hat Vang” will be the cover which gathers the most people dancing to the song.Celebrities join the dance

The popularity of the song has been solidified by Psy’s appearances on many renowned shows including “The Today Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Numerous celebrities around the world including T-Pain, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Tom Cruise have shared the video on their sites while complimenting the South Korean singer. Britney even visited the “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to learn how to do the “horse riding” dance move with Psy.

Not wanting to miss trend, Vietnamese celebrities have pleased their fans by dancing “Gangnam Style.” At a recent fan meeting in Hanoi, young singer Dong Nhi brought laughs to her fans by doing the horse riding dance, and pop band 365 performed the same moves on stage at their show.

The new thing is the hot thing?

While the whole world seems to be excited by “Gangnam Style”, a number of viewers have expressed negative opinions on the song, calling it nonsense and just for fun.

Reader Nghia Nguyen shared with Tuoitrenews that he wonders why people have gone so crazy over the song.

“Nothing special except the funny act of Psy. People are exaggerated!” Duc Trong commented.

“This is the first time I have seen this. Perhaps the new thing is the hot thing. But time will answer,” Minh Nguyen added.
