Typhoon Gaemi, with winds of 75-88 kph, is moving in the East Sea towards Vietnam’s Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh coastal region, said the Central Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center.
At 1 pm yesterday, October 4, the tropical storm was located 670 km southeast of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, with winds of 75-88 kph and gusts of up to 117 kph. The typhoon has since moved west-southwest at 10 km and appeared to strengthen slightly.
At 1 pm today the storm will lay 410 km southeast of Hoang Sa archipelago, with winds of 75-102 kph and gusts of 103-132 kph. It will then move mainly west at 15-20 kph .
At 4 pm Saturday, the typhoon is expected to be 170 km east of the coast between Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh Provinces, packing winds of 89-102 kph and gusts of 103- 132 kph. It will then move west-northwest at 20 kph.
If its path remains unchanged, the storm will hit the region between Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh on Saturday night, Bui Minh Tang, director of the center, said at yesterday’s meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Floods and Storm Prevention and Control.
However, there is also a chance the storm will stray slightly and land in other provinces in the region, such as Quang Nam, Da Nang or Phu Yen, Tang said.
This 48-hour forecast will be subject to a discrepancy of 200-250 km, Tang explained.
When the storms lands, it will bring heavy rains to an area from Binh Dinh to Quang Binh Provinces from early Saturday, October 6, with rainfall amounts reaching 100-200 mm, or even up to 300-400 mm in some areas, he said.
The Central Steering Committee for Floods and Storm Prevention and Control has urged all authorities of provinces that may be affected by the typhoon to create effective plans to cope with the storm and subsequent flooding.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has set up a working team that will today take a trip to provinces that are expected to be affected by the typhoon.
