Local artist brings new music to renowned outdoor concert

Young musician Nguyen Hong Giang is Vietnam’s only representative at “Siestes Électroniques” (Electronic Naps), the free outdoor concert showcasing the experimental music of otherwise French artists, to be held in Hanoi on October 19.

Giang studied piano at the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City, but his music now extends far beyond his classical background. Since 2007, Giang started experimenting with what he calls “the art of noise,” incorporating many complicated instruments into his music. Giang then expanded his musical exploration into the fields of electronic and computer music. He’s now a member of the electronic rock band Time Keeper, performing under the name Writher.

Giang spoke with Tuoi Tre about the upcoming concert, which has been held in cities around the world.

How have you prepared to share the stage with French artists at “Siestes Électroniques?”

I have finished my work for the show. My music is based on electronic sounds but inspired by nature; combined with South East Asian traditional musical instruments, this results in a unique contemporary sound.

I will adjust my music according to my interactions with the other artists as well as the audience, adapting to the show’s atmosphere.

Electronic music is not new to Vietnam, yet many people are not familiar with it. Do you believe the concert will draw public attention?

I do. I understand that for many listeners, electronic music is a new genre. Some like it, others don’t. That’s not a big deal anymore since music and art always need new and different concepts. What’s important is that artists retain their passion to create new music, enriching the current industry.

In your opinion, what will “Siestes Électroniques” bring to its audiences?

Audiences will have the chance to enjoy genres of music that are completely new to Vietnam: Ambient, Experimental, IDM, Downtempo, Glitch-hop…, which have already been enjoyed by many people around the world. Because this is a very special art space, the audience will enjoy a unique experience; it will be much different than an average local art show.

Have you got any further plan for your music after these “naps”?

Actually, I have released several albums but they are only available on http://writher.bandcamp.com/ because I don’t have much time. Maybe I will select some of my favorite tracks to release on CDs. Of course, I will continue making music and explore all ingredients of music past and present, as well as practice and experiment with new music and songs.

“Siestes Électroniques” was first held in Toulouse in Southern France in 2002. The fact that it is held free of charge in an open space with an undisclosed set list has made “Siestes Électroniques” a unique and popular event in many countries since.

This year, the concert will be brought to Vietnam for the first time as part of the activities to celebrate the France – Vietnam Year. It will also feature French artists including Vincent Moon, Laurent Jeanneau and Jean Nipon.

“Siestes Électroniques” will take place on October 19 at Hanoi’s Thong Nhat Park. It was planned to be held in HCMC on October 12 but was cancelled on account of the State funeral for General Vo Nguyen Giap.
