With finishing touches being made,  the Nguyen Hue Tet Flower Street in downtown district 1 is almost ready to open on Jan 28 and run for the next seven days during Tet, the country’s biggest festival, which kicks off on Jan 31.

The flower street is divided into seven segments and spans nearly one kilometer on Nguyen Hue Street. The street will be temporarily closed for construction for 11 days, from 7 A.M on Jan 18 to 6 P.M on Jan 28.

Then the fest will officially kick off at 7 P.M on Jan 28 (the 28th day of the last month in the lunar calendar) and close at 10 P.M on Feb 3 (the 4th Tet day). It’s expected that more than 1 million tourists will visit the flower street during this time.

According to Tran Hung Viet, CEO of Saigontourist, the event organizer, though the quantity of flowers this year drops compared to that in last year’s Tet, the fest, in its 11th year, will still sparkle with a variety of rare, gorgeous ones and stunning decorative, rustic landscape.

Approximately 30% of the flowers come from Sa Dec flower village in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap while the remainder comes from Da Lat and HCMC.

Themed “Ho Chi Minh City – The city I love”, the fest will also showcase the grace of flower and ornamental plant installations and the glittery Nguyen Hue light street.

Big screens will also be installed at a number of points along the flower street in addition to flag banners to showcase the images of the event during its 11 years as well as the city’s dominant economic-social success.

At the entrance to the flower street stand the five white horses, each measuring some 3.3m and 2m in length and height, which is a symbol of the Year of the Horse.

Tet flower festivals and markets in HCMC

The city’s Tet Flower Festival will run in 12 days, from Jan 25 to Feb 5, at areas around Cong truong Quoc Te and Tao Dan Park, at 55C Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, District 1.

Tao Dan Park will be divided into four main areas, which showcase exhibits of flowers, ornamental fish and stones and miniature plant landscape. Music performances, including traditional music, children's games, calligraphy and culinary delights will also be offered.

Meanwhile, the city-level Tet Flower Markets are set to run at 23-9, Gia Dinh and Le Van Tam Parks.

Tet flower markets will also be held at 128 areas in 19 districts citywide to meet locals’ demands in buying flowers and plants and reduce the amount of traffic in downtown areas during the Tet holiday.
