A pop star has become the third Vietnamese singer to claim the best Asian artist title – in respect of Vietnam's music context – of the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).

Ho Quynh Huong brought home the “Asian Artist of the Year in Vietnam” title at the 2014 MAMA, which is one of K-pop's biggest music events.

The title is conferred on singers in each of the selected Asian countries for their outstanding contributions to the local and Asian music scenes.

Though Huong was unable to attend the awards ceremony in Hong Kong on Wednesday night, she sent a video message saying the award came as a surprise and is a huge honor.

The singer also promised to give her best to the Vietnamese and Asian music industry.

Local pop stars My Tam and Thu Minh won the title in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

Huong is popular for her sensual and unique voice, which helped her win the Favorite Singer of Lan Song Xanh (Blue Wave) – a music award launched annually by the Ho Chi Minh City radio station – four years in a row, along with several other local music awards.

She has appeared at many international music events and showed up as a guest singer and juror in several reality TV shows, including “Dancing with the Stars” during season one and “Vietnam Idol” in season three.

In June 2013, Huong was crowned Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity Woman after winning a fierce month-long competition organized by the U.S.-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

According to news.asiaone.com, MAMA has been dubbed Asia's response to the MTV Video Music Awards, and the “East Asia Grammys.”

The 2014 MAMA featured 17 award categories.

The Best Female Artist award was given away to IU, who saw much success in 2014, while Korea’s BigBang member Taeyang won Best Male Artist for his solo album “Rise.”

The night's biggest award, Best Album of the Year, went to Korean band EXO for their album “Overdose.”

According to Wikipedia, the MAMAs are one of the major K-pop music award ceremonies held annually by CJ E&M through its music channel Mnet.

The event involves the participation of many showbiz celebrities in South Korea and other countries, including China and Japan.
